elementMassType

The mass of an element is given either directly by <mass> or by <density>, from which it follows with the volume of the geometry. <location> and <massInertia> complete it to the mass properties that weight and balance works with.

Center of gravity

<location> is the center of gravity in the element coordinate system, i.e. in the coordinate system in which the transformed geometry lies. The transformation of the geometry does not apply to it. Without <location>, the center of gravity is the centroid of the volume of the geometry.

Inertia

<massInertia> gives the mass moments of inertia about the center of gravity, in the axes of the element coordinate system. It is not derived from the geometry; without it, the inertia of the element is not specified.

Rules

With <density>, the geometry must have a volume.
An element without geometry primitives gives its mass by <mass> together with <location>.
Where primitives overlap, or where the geometry is an envelope or a placeholder, the mass is given by <mass>: a mass derived from <density> would count the overlap more than once or use the volume of the envelope (see elementGeometryType).
